Ebony is a form of metal that is found in the Ashlands. It is exceptionally tough and sturdy, making it an excellent material for jewelry and armor. Ebony is famous for its toughness, which is almost similar to Valyrian steel. But in contrast to Valyrian steel, Ebony is not appropriate for weaponry, for the ore is near impossible to grind thanks to its extreme sturdiness.
Ebony ore is recognizable for its distinctive black color. The Ashlands are the only location were raw Ebony can be found. Thanks to Red Mountain's volcanic activity, the volcanic rock beneath the dusty surface of the Wasteland became transmuted into Ebony, although no one is sure how this was caused. Even though Ebony is often compared to Valyrian steel, it lacks its counterpart's magical nature, and therefore the metal can eventually break, although it requires massive strength to do so. House Blackgard became wealthy thanks to its Ebony trade, and this in turn culminated in them gaining many enemies who seek to take over their successful business, one of them included House Keller during the Fourth Border Wars.
In contrast to the real life Ebony, the Ebony found in Westeros is a metal, whereas the Ebony we know is a type of hardwood.
